Set in 1980 Tokyo, this debut novel preoccupies itself with the theme of identity born of mixed heritage. At the the plot level, it's a fairly effective mystery about an American woman who goes missing and the sad sack Japanese detective who's assigned her case. The woman is Lisa Countryman, who is ostensibly in Tokyo to research the sex economy for her PhD thesis. She was born in Japan, but was adopted as a baby by a black U.S. military family, and the real impetus for her trip is to locate her birth mother. When her sister in the U.S. eventually calls the embassy for help in locating her, the case is assigned to Tom Hurley. He's a somewhat dissolute 30something consular officer who's mostly interested in bedding the wife of a CIA officer, but is also conflicted about his own mixed heritage. Hurley passes the case on to Kenzo Ota, a lonely, ineffectual, middle-aged police detective invisible to his peers and society in general.

For Ota, the case is an opportunity to get away from his window office (a position of shame in the Japanese workplace at the time) and win some respect from his colleagues. Ota's investigation alternates with flashbacks to Lisa's arrival in Japan, as she drifts from research into bar hostessing, and hires a detective of her own to track down her mother. Meanwhile, a third subplot revolves around Hurley's affair with the CIA wife, Julia, who has somehow heard about the missing Lisa and takes a mysterious interest in the case. There's also a running subplot about Ota's personal life, which includes an encounter with his ex-wife and her son (who may be his), and a budding romance. This is a lot of plot to juggle, and Lee mostly pulls it off, although the book probably could have been much improved by excising or greatly diminishing the Hurley material. The best parts of the book are those that follow Lisa as she navigates the world of fly-by-night English schools and various levels of hostess bars, and those showing the forlorn Ota struggling for redemption. He's the embodiment of one aspect of the Japanese national psyche, the sense that life is suffering and sorrow, and that moments of happiness are the exception rather than the rule.

What's also quite good about the book is the portrait of Japan, although one has to remember that it is set some 25 years in the past (the Iran hostage crisis is a running background element). It's a time when foreigners were present in Tokyo in much lesser numbers than now but Western cultural influence is starting to assert itself. Against all this, the central theme of identity is brought ought through the Japanese preoccupation with racial distinctions and the conflicts deep within many of the characters about themselves. Lee's prose is quite fluid and if the book is guilty of anything, it's of trying to cram in a bit too much. Still, I will certainly keep an eye out for his next book.

The Merlot Murders ((Wine Country Mysteries, Book 1) CustomerReview

I read this book twice, about three years apart. When I read it the first time, I enjoyed it but noticed a few quirky points. I then put it on my shelf and left it there for quite a while. I picked it up fresh a few days ago and read through it again. Again, I enjoyed it a lot - but the same points stood out to me again.

The story revolves around Lucie, one of three siblings in a winemaking family in Virginia. You begin with Lucie recovering from an accident, off in France. She gets the sad news that her father has passed away, which draws her back into the complicated family dynamics. Her brother is married to an annoying woman. Her younger sister is now dating her ex-boyfriend who caused the accident. To top it all off, it looks like her father might have been murdered!

Author Ellen Crosby does a fantastic job with just about every aspect of the story. The characters are memorable but also quite realistic. You can imagine the pregnant sister-in-law being just that way, self-absorbed and demanding. The world they inhabit is equally lush. The visuals are beautiful, from the rich scent of the lavender to the aquamarine waters dancing around them.

I really like that the main character - Lucie - is disabled and stands up for herself. She's a real inspiration to disabled people everywhere, and helps show all the problems disabled people run into just navigating the normal ins and outs of life.

Having run a wine site for over ten years, I was also really pleased with the wine details. Ellen does a great job of drawing you into the world of winemaking without making it a chore. There's just the right balance of information and entertainment. She adds in the commonly quoted line about "the way to make a small fortune in a winery is to start with a large one" which I've always loved. Winemaking is a very expensive hobby!

I only have one issue with the book, and it stood out glaringly at me both times I read it. There's a large room in the winery which has windows in it. Apparently the building inspector REQUIRED them to seal those windows shut because apparently anything which lets in both air and light doesn't conform to code?? The code of a building is that windows can't open? This makes NO sense to me and seems like a really inane plot device. If there really is a reason that some code requires all windows to be sealed shut, it would be nice if it was explained more clearly. I've been in many wineries and they all have had windows that open.

So that point aside, I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy!

For most people, what probably drew them, or will draw them to this memoir, this author, this event, is one word in the subtitle of this marvelous book: Ireland. Whether you are as Irish as the characters described within "I'll Know it When I See It," or have a last name that sounds more like...Raucher...for instance, the word Ireland still conjures up a multitude of images, of the place itself, its long, difficult and complex history, and how it is also interwoven with the myths and tales of this country. And many of those images have little connection to any reality about the place; but, nevertheless...the romantic image of Ireland persists.

But "I'll Know it When I See It" is not a soft clover travel guide; for one, we spend as much time in Astoria, Queens and on 55th Street right here in Manhattan as we do in County Cork. The events that take place not five miles from the spot where this reading takes place are as indelibly recalled, and as potent for our narrator, as any that take place across the Atlantic, on that verdant island.

But, to this reader at least, the key word in the title is not Ireland; it is something even deeper and more universal: Home.

The number of Illinois' colleges represented is a pretty small slice of decent schools available there.

Just so, Pennsylvania. Many good schools are simply not covered. The introduction that explains how colleges are selected is rather vague--and not very convincing.

All of that said, the discussion of those colleges covered isn't bad. There is enough discussion and information to begin to distinguish one school from another. Thus, this is a useful resource, but it is compromised by spotty coverage of some fine institutions in the United States.

What's better than gossip with your gnocchi, tell-alls with your tea, or rumors with your rib roast? Everyone loves to eat and, whether we'll admit it or not, we all enjoy hearing the lascivious latest. Liz Smith, who well knows her way around a table and a tantalizing tale, has combined dish with recipes in her latest book. The title is "Dishing," and it's all gravy.

You gotta' love a gal who schmoozes with the rich and fabulous admitting that she once took a children's course in table manners after being flummoxed by a finger bowl during lunch with Mrs. Vincent Astor. It was during this class at the Plaza that she learned the appropriate way to leave a table: "......"we must never explain why we are leaving the table if we do. Simply get up and say `Excuse me," and fold the napkin across the back of the chair so the waiter will know you plan to return."

This came as news to the former resident of Fort Worth, Texas, whose constant childhood dish was milk toast, and where her mother insisted that she and her siblings eat watermelon in the bathtub because it was easier to hose them off afterwards. However, Texas is, as we know, where the stars are big and bright - there must have also been a lucky one for Miz Liz to be born under because one of the first to become her friend in New York City was Sirio, a waiter. Later, Sirio Maccioni would own a famous restaurant, Le Cirque.

Another famous restauranteur, Henri Soule, taught her the proper way to eat caviar, and she hilariously recalls the time he gifted her with an expensive case of wine. Having no idea of the value of this rare Chateau Petrus, she served it to her friends along with chili.

There's very little, whether it's food or the famous, that this author has missed. There's a memorable dinner in Paris with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and she sat with Nicole Kidman as the svelte star polished off every roll and bread in the table basket.

Amongst all the glitterati with whom has she shared the most unusual meals? Malcolm Forbes. "My first meeting with Malcolm, she writes, "was at a private dinner given by Barbara Walters where Malcolm roared up on a motorcycle and came in wearing black tie, carrying his helmet. He offered me a ride home but I dislike flying through thin air at sixty miles an hours."

Theirs was a mutually beneficial friendship, as he enjoyed the publicity she offered his magazine while she enjoyed being a guest on his yacht and visiting the Forbes chateau in Normandy. (Who wouldn't?) Nonetheless, according to Miz Liz the most outstanding meal they shared was a breakfast at his office building which housed his museum quality collectibles. On this occasion Forbes had the table decorated with his Faberge eggs, scattered about among the napkins and silver.

"Dishing" is subtitled "Great Dish - and Dishes - from America's Most Beloved Gossip Columnist." And, dishes there are - recipes for everything from Elvis's favorite potato sandwich to "Chipped Beef a la Krupp Diamond" courtesy of Liz Taylor.

With her column now syndicated in more than 70 newspapers, Miz Liz knows how to write, and even though she's been thinking about "turning her apartment kitchen into a closet," she knows what to eat and where to eat it. "Dishing" is a fun feast - pull up a chair and enjoy it.

Because of its international overtones the homosexual cop and the heterosexual shrink are forced to team up with an Israeli police Inspector to solve case. It's a great mix of characters, each bringing his own unusual talents into the battle against a gang of killers who feel their high IQ's give them the right to decide the fate of others. Each new murder seems unrelated, but Alex sees an ugly thread tying them all together and that thread is eugenics. The ending is especially creepy as Milo and Sharavi struggle to save Alex's life and the true motives behind the murders is unveiled.
